Project Overview

When you watch a gymnast flip, tumble and twist, jaw dropping at their balance, flexibility, agility and endurance, you rarely think of what’s happening beneath their feet.

Underneath the floor mat supporting the artistry is literally a web of springs, specifically designed to facilitate the needs of the gymnast.

Working with Tumbl Trak, the international distributor of gymnastic equipment, Lesjöfors Heavy Springs developed a high-quality sprung floor spring, to optimise the athletic potential of gymnasts within the rigorous safety boundaries of the industry.

What was the brief?
As gymnasts push the boundaries of what is humanly possible, it is essential that the equipment they use develops and evolves with them. Lesjöfors Heavy Springs were asked to develop a high-quality sprung floor spring, to further enhance the experience gained by athletes.
What makes the project special?
The gymnastics floor area has seen numerous improvements and adaptations over the years, all with the aim of increasing performance while keeping the gymnast as safe as possible. Knowing that our springs lay at the foundations of inspiring Olympians meant we too had to deliver a successful performance.
What did Lesjöfors Heavy Springs do?
Spring material choice, design and layout are essential components in the making of a floor area and using the best quality materials is of the utmost importance. It was essential that we achieved this quality and provided Tumbl Trak with a spring design that enabled them to supply gymnasts and clubs with high-quality training equipment, allowing them to ‘Train smart’ and continue enjoying the sport of gymnastics.

Manufacturing

Cold coil manufacture.
Due to the size and material requirement of the compression spring design, our heavy duty advanced spring coilers manufactured the gymnastic floor springs which were then heat treated (to enhance strength).

Spring placement in the floor mats required the grinding department to grind the ends to a certain specification so they could meet the demands of the product installation.
What materials were used in this case study and why?
Material choice is essential to the success of a project. In this circumstance, the compression spring design and function required a carbon steel material which delivered all the qualities demanded of the product at a competitive price.

Resistant to repetitive use in high pressure environments, the carbon spring steel material used also allows for hardening treatments and offers a cost effective solution, alongside durability - both properties highly desired by customers.
