Institute of Spring Technology (IST)

Formerly known as the UK spring manufacturers association, the IST is an integral part of the global spring industry with an exceptional reputation for metallurgy and steel-making knowledge and we’re proud members.

Our engineers work with the IST team, securing further advancements to technical insights and expertise to our role as leading spring manufacturers.

How are springs manufactured?

We hot and cold coil springs. Springs with a wide wire diameter require a hot coiling process. The process of heating up wire to approximately 900 degrees celsius, quenching in oil and then tempering to complete the heat treatment, allows the spring material to be coiled to the specifications required.

There are two processes for cold coiling. Commonly, wire that has already been heat-treated is cold coiled (as its material is already at peak strength) and this allows for numerous spring and wire forms and functions. The other method is coiling wire in a soft state and then heat-treating it to its final strength
which enables larger wire diameters and smaller indexes – a core focus for many of our customers.

Spring Manufacturing FAQ

As spring suppliers, compression springs, torsion springs and tension springs are our three main spring types

There are many types of materials that can make springs and each metal delivers different functionalities across torsion spring, compression spring and tension spring design and performance. Our spring engineers can advise on the right materials for the right functionality and environment of a springs need.

A cheap spring is one that doesn’t work, has a short fatigue life, operates poorly under stress and doesn’t perform the functions required. It’s essential that the right wire, design, engineering and manufacturing and production processes are used to support the expectation of a springs application.

High-quality chrome silicon or chrome vanadium wire. These steel alloys have a chemical composition, tensile strength and surface property that when combined with spring size deliver exceptional strong performance levels.

We are world-leading heavy duty spring manufacturers, delivering the greatest expertise in compression, torsion and tension spring manufacturing.

Delivering impact to every industry, we guarantee spring solutions that will optimise your performance and success.
